Black Pelican Oceanfront Restaurant occupies a stretch of Beach Road (N Virginia Dare Trail) right on the water in Kitty Hawk, part of the continuous strip of oceanfront dining and shops that runs south through Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. It is open seven days a week, serving lunch through dinner in a casual, beach-town dining room where the ocean is close enough to hear.

If visiting during shoulder season (April-May or September-October), expect a calmer dining room and easier parking than the peak summer crush between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Kitty Hawk sits just north of Kill Devil Hills, close to where the Wright Brothers made their first flight in 1903, and an oceanfront table here is a solid, low-key stop after a day on the beach or at Jockey's Ridge.

Black Pelican is a must on our annual stay in OBX. The menu offers a good selection of choices and quality is fairly consistent. Our group usually orders a mix of appetizers, beef and seafood dishes, the vegetarian marinated mushrooms on top of gouda mashed potatoes ( yum) and none of us have ever been disappointed. Because it's a popular choice, dinner hours can can be quite busy and noisey so be prepared to wait for a table, but waiting outside by the ocean or on the upstairs balcony makes the wait time enjoyable. Do NOT skip desserts even if you have to take them to go! So generous and yummy!

My family had a good experience here, the magician going table to table was a hit with my kids. I'd have given 5 stars if my bacon-wrapped scallop entre had more than 4 medium sized scallops. I mean it was delicious but for the price they could have made it a little more than appetizer-sized. Otherwise it was a great place, will definitely come back and just order something different :)
