What to expect each season at Cape Hatteras National Seashore
Spring
Spring brings warming temperatures, thinning off-season quiet, and some of the best all-around weather of the year on the Outer Banks. March can still be cool and windy; by May the water is warming toward swimmable and the core beach towns start filling in for the season. This is generally considered one of the best windows to visit - mild weather, manageable crowds, and everything open ahead of summer.

Summer
Summer is Outer Banks peak season - warm water, long beach days, and the busiest stretch on the islands. It's also the start of hurricane season (officially June 1), though most named storms that could actually affect the islands develop later, in August and beyond. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. Lodging books up well in advance for July and August.

Fall
NowFall is hurricane season's most active stretch (peak is typically August-October) but also, in years without a direct hit, some of the calmest and most pleasant weather on the islands - warm water lingering into September, thinning crowds after Labor Day, and comfortable temperatures through November. Many locals consider fall the best season, with the caveat that it's worth watching the forecast.

Winter
Winter is the Outer Banks' quietest season - many seasonal restaurants and shops close, but the islands themselves stay open and beautiful. Rip Currents
Rip currents are the leading cause of ocean-related fatalities on the Outer Banks. They can form on any beach, in any conditions, not just rough surf. If caught in one, don't fight it directly - swim parallel to shore until free of the current, then swim in. Check the daily surf/rip current forecast before swimming, and swim near a lifeguarded beach when possible (most OBX beaches are not lifeguarded).
Hurricane Season Planning
Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest activity typically August through October. Most years pass without a direct hit, but it's worth watching the forecast if you're booking a trip in that window - and worth having a flexible cancellation policy on lodging just in case. NPS and NCDOT both post real-time storm/road updates during an active system.
NC-12 Storm Closures
NC-12, the only road connecting the Hatteras Island villages, occasionally closes for a day or two after a strong storm due to ocean overwash, even from hurricanes that pass well offshore. It typically reopens within a day or two once crews clear the road. Check DriveNC.gov before a Hatteras Island trip during hurricane season, especially if you're headed to Rodanthe, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, or Hatteras village.
Ferry Schedule Dependency
Ocracoke Island is reachable only by ferry - the free Hatteras-Ocracoke route or longer paid crossings from the mainland. Ferries are weather-dependent and can be delayed or suspended during storms. If Ocracoke is on your itinerary, build in a buffer day and check current ferry status at ncdot.gov/ferry before you go.
Beach Driving & Soft Sand
The northern beaches beyond Corolla (Carova and the other 4x4 beaches) are accessible only by driving on the sand - a real 4WD vehicle is required, not just an SUV. Tire pressure should be lowered for soft sand, and it's easy to get stuck without the right vehicle or experience. This is a genuinely different kind of driving than the paved roads further south.
Sun & Heat at the Beach
Reflected sun off sand and water increases UV exposure well beyond what the air temperature suggests, and a beach day can lead to sunburn or dehydration faster than expected. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming, and bring more water than seems necessary - especially with kids.
