About

Breakwater is a bar and restaurant in Hatteras village, near the southern tip of Hatteras Island where NC-12 ends at the ferry docks for Ocracoke. It's categorized as a brewery and bar alongside its restaurant menu, sitting in the $$ price range — a solid stop for a sit-down meal or a round of drinks.

Hours

  • Closed Monday and Tuesday
  • Open Wednesday through Sunday, though specific opening and closing times aren't listed here — call (252) 986-2733 or check the website before you go

Its spot near the island's south end puts it close to the ferry terminal, so it fits naturally into a day that starts or ends with the crossing to Ocracoke. Hatteras Island itself is a narrower, more exposed stretch of the Outer Banks than the beaches farther north, and NC-12 — the only road connecting its villages — closes here with some regularity, especially during hurricane season, so it's worth confirming hours haven't shifted before making a special trip.

Our family of 6 had a wonderful dining experience at the Breakwater Restaurant. When we arrived the hostess was friendly and attentive. She let us know that our server was preparing our table with waters before we were seated which was fantastic after a long day at the beach. Our server Laya was friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and provided a well paced our dinner service. We were dining with two children under 4 and she was fantastic at meeting everyone’s needs. Thank you for everything Laya! We had a fun night out!

Great to be back to the Breakwater for the first time in probably 10+ years! The restaurant looked great and service from Laya was fantastic: quick, professional and good recommendations! The food was as good as ever, happy to see the tuna tortilla hasn’t changed over the years!

We wound up at Breakwater when a couple of other local restaurants that we stopped at had 60-90 minute waits. To our surprise, we had a seat at Breakwater within 5 minutes. That honestly had us a bit concerned. Had we made a poor choice? The restaurant was bright and clean and beautiful. The view of the sound was fantastic. Our server was kind and attentive and prompt. Our food—a flounder special—was excellent. I can’t think of a single complaint. Well done, Breakwater. We’ll be back!

Laya was an excellent server, very prompt and professional. Food was great. Best sunset views in Hatteras. Very limited gluten free options.
