The Cockeyed Clam may just be our favorite restaurant on Hatteras Island. Our party of five arrived early and was promptly seated, setting the tone for an excellent evening. From the start, our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to help, offering recommendations when a few members of our group couldn't decide what to order. She highly recommended the fried calamari, and it did not disappoint. Combined with the restaurant's signature steamed clams, it made for an outstanding start to the meal. One piece of advice: order extra bread. The clam broth is far too good to leave behind. Honestly, stopping after the appetizers would have already made for a memorable dining experience. The entrées were exceptional across the board. The crab cakes were especially impressive, enormous, packed with flavor, and every bit as good as some of the best we've enjoyed in Baltimore and Annapolis. Our server also suggested the Smith & Hook Cabernet Sauvignon, and what a recommendation that turned out to be. It was the perfect complement to the meal and a wine we'll be searching for once we're back home. By the end of the evening, the restaurant was packed, with a long line of guests waiting outside. Judging by the smiles all around, everyone seemed as happy with their experience as we were. Tip: The restaurant offers a small discount for cash payments, a nice bonus on top of an already fantastic meal.
