Family Water Adventures

Family-friendly time on the water, based right at Landing Marina in Hatteras village

(189)
Hatteras, NC

About

Family Water Adventures operates out of Landing Marina in Hatteras village, at the south end of Hatteras Island where NC-12 finally runs out and the free ferry to Ocracoke departs across the inlet. It's a family-oriented outfit built around getting people out on the water — the kind of operation that fits naturally into a working marina at the island's southern tip, where charter boats, sport-fishing rigs, and day-trippers headed for the ferry all share the same docks.

Location and Hours

The marina sits inside Hatteras village proper, an easy stop before or after the Ocracoke ferry run. Family Water Adventures keeps consistent daily hours, open 8am to 5pm seven days a week, which makes it easier to plan around than a seasonal or weather-dependent schedule.

For current trip offerings, availability, and pricing, call ahead at (252) 216-5683 or check captaintamigray.com before you go — conditions on the water here can change quickly, so it's worth confirming details no matter what time of year you're visiting.

We had an absolute blast with Tami today! She dropped us right on a shelling spot and we found tons of knobbed whelks and olives, some lightning whelks and shark's eyes, a perfect scotch bonnet, and a perfect helmet shell. We had so many shells my husband dropped one of his bags. I'd give 10 stars if I could. Tami was also fun and helped teach us what to look for in the water. She was out with us shelling and snorkeling. This will probably become a yearly tradition.

Our four-hour tour with Captain Ken was one of the most incredible family experiences we’ve ever had together. We spent the afternoon exploring the sandbars and shoals between Hatteras and Ocracoke, wading through warm, clear water and discovering places that felt almost tropical—right here in North Carolina. The shelling was absolutely amazing. We came home with several large bags of unique shells in shapes, colors, and sizes we’ve never found along the northern beaches. We visited three different secluded spots, including one where live sand dollars were everywhere. The kids had an absolute blast digging them up, exploring, and wandering through an area we had almost entirely to ourselves. The experience was the perfect mix of exciting, peaceful, and unforgettable. Captain Ken was friendly, knowledgeable, and a wonderful host. We felt safe and comfortable the entire time, and everyone in the family loved it. This was truly a magical experience and a highlight of our time in the Outer Banks. We cannot recommend OBX Family Water Adventures highly enough!

Tami and her crew were great! We used their 4 boats for shelling excursions. All captains were very personable and fun to be around. We found a lot of shells and sand dollars. We would highly recommend doing a tour with them! So much fun!!

We soo enjoyed our cruise with Captain Jack and Captain Tami!! Shell island was amazing, the snorkeling was a lot of fun! We will definitely be booking another charter next time we are in the Outer Banks!! Thanks for a great afternoon of fun!

Our family of five had an absolute blast with Captain Jeremy. Our kids (11, 9, and 6) wanted to go shelling, and he 100% delivered. We hit up a couple of islands in the sound and walked away with tons of shells — we now joke that he ruined shelling for us because of the beautiful ones we found with him. We had tons of questions for him, too, about sharks and shells and boats and weather and anything else you could think of — and he gladly answered them all. We chose them initially because it was close to where we were staying in Frisco, but on our next trip to the Outer Banks, regardless of where we stay, we’ll book another trip with Captain Jeremy. This was by far the most memorable part of our trip! 10/10 recommend
