Fish Heads Bar & Grill sits at the far south end of Nags Head, out past the main Beach Road strip near Whalebone Junction and the approach to Oregon Inlet — closer to the bridge toward Hatteras Island than to the shops and dune-side attractions in the middle of town. It's a casual bar-and-grill setup, the kind of place where a plate of food and a cold drink matter more than the scenery, though this stretch of the barrier island keeps open water in view from nearly every angle.

The kitchen and bar run Wednesday through Sunday, roughly 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and stay closed Monday and Tuesday — worth checking before you make the drive, especially outside peak summer months when Outer Banks restaurants tend to trim their schedules further. Prices land in the moderate ($$) range, in line with most casual bar-and-grill fare on this end of the beach.

Because it sits well outside the main Kill Devil Hills-Nags Head-Kitty Hawk corridor, Fish Heads works best as a stop on the way to or from Oregon Inlet, the fishing charters based near there, or a day trip further south toward Hatteras Island — not as a lunch break between Jockey's Ridge and the beach shops up the road.

This was the consensus #1 best restaurant in Nags Head by my family on our recent trip. The vibe check passed with flying colors. The atmosphere can't be topped! The food was absolutely amazing- everything we had was exceptional. For tuna lovers, I have to recommend the Wicked Tuna Sandwich. Think of a huge slab of tuna and a quality home made big mac with the tuna replacing the burger. It's crazy to say but I think this is my favorite seafood concoction of all time! We had a great time walking the pier after dinner and getting the best photos of our trip. Service was friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back on future trips to OBX!

Fish Heads Bar & Grill was such a fun experience! Loved the rustic pier house charm, fantastic atmosphere, and the beautiful ocean views. The food was absolutely delicious, and it was so much fun checking out all the can koozies and unique signage throughout the place. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, plenty of beers on tap to try, and the service was friendly and fast. Definitely a great spot to relax, enjoy the view, and soak in the beach vibes. Highly recommend!

This is the PLACE TO GO when you visit the Outter Banks. We LOVED sitting on the pier right by the ocean. The coconut shrimp app and the specialty tuna sandwich was out of this world. They were so accommodating for our dog we came with. Ty was our waiter , he gave amazing recommendations he was a great guy. If you go anywhere out to eat for lunch and dinner this is the place you NEED to go to !. I work as a restaurant manager in upstate NY I will not steer you wrong..

SOOOO YUMMY!!! We visited around 2pm and were able to find good parking and had no wait. We got the pierhouse nachos for an appetizer, coconut shrimp basket, and fish basket. Everything tasted amazing, we had great service, and even got to see dolphins when walking down the pier!

Fish Heads is excellent with a perfect mix of tasty foods & drinks, ocean views & customer service. This is my go to place to relax & soak in all the ocean vibes. Their menu has a good variety with something for vegetarians, sea food fans, & meat lovers. Portions are generous & are always hot & fresh. I definitely recommend it as a place to relax & unwind & literally watch the waves come in while you enjoy your food.
