Fish Heads Bar & Grill sits at the far south end of Nags Head, out past the main Beach Road strip near Whalebone Junction and the approach to Oregon Inlet — closer to the bridge toward Hatteras Island than to the shops and dune-side attractions in the middle of town. It's a casual bar-and-grill setup, the kind of place where a plate of food and a cold drink matter more than the scenery, though this stretch of the barrier island keeps open water in view from nearly every angle.

The kitchen and bar run Wednesday through Sunday, roughly 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and stay closed Monday and Tuesday — worth checking before you make the drive, especially outside peak summer months when Outer Banks restaurants tend to trim their schedules further. Prices land in the moderate ($$) range, in line with most casual bar-and-grill fare on this end of the beach.

Because it sits well outside the main Kill Devil Hills-Nags Head-Kitty Hawk corridor, Fish Heads works best as a stop on the way to or from Oregon Inlet, the fishing charters based near there, or a day trip further south toward Hatteras Island — not as a lunch break between Jockey's Ridge and the beach shops up the road.
