Flying Melon

A Back Road restaurant in Ocracoke village, open weekdays only

(458)
$$$$Ocracoke, NC

About

Flying Melon sits on Back Road in the heart of Ocracoke village, not far from Silver Lake Harbor and the working waterfront that has anchored the island's only town for generations. It's a moderately priced restaurant, marked $$ on the scale — a straightforward meal rather than an occasion.

Know before you go

  • Open Monday through Friday; closed Saturday and Sunday
  • No specific hours are posted for the days it's open — call ahead before making the trip over
  • No website on file, so phone is the most reliable way to reach the restaurant directly

Ocracoke itself is reachable only by water or air — the free state ferry from Hatteras village takes about an hour, while the toll ferries from Cedar Island or Swan Quarter on the mainland run closer to two and a quarter hours each way. Given that, it's worth confirming Flying Melon is open before building it into a day's plans on the island; Back Road puts it within easy walking distance of the harbor and the rest of the village.

There is "good food" worthy of 5 stars, like "great burger." There's also "foodie food." This is 5 star foodie food, IYKYN. The signature cocktail, the Pep Talk is SUBLIME. Crafted with a 3 punch hit! Sour, hot then smooth and tasty. Genius. The au poivre was no less brilliant. Every ingredient was purposeful and expertly layered. Gastronomes: this your Okracoke Island treat.

Really great service, our waitress Zoey was super attentive and helpful. She explained the menus and checked on us often, we had someone the was Gluten Free and she took care of us with a lot of care. The food, especially the fish was really fresh and the cocktails were delicious. Even the kids meals were amazing, not just frozen little kid filler but well made food that’s worth the money!

Best dining experience on the island. Upscale atmosphere and quality food for a very reasonable price. Waitress was fantastic

We LOVE THIS PLACE!!! we have been here for 3-4 times over our 3 times to the island. DELLLICIIOOOUSSSS! fresh, amazing seafood. Sweet staff. GREAT COCKTAILS - shoutout to Kevin & Spencer!

We ate here this week. Everything was phenomenal. We especially loved the steak entrees. We tried both and I have to say it’s the best steak I’ve ever had. I normally eat fish or seafood on the island but the steak here has become my fav. Cooked perfectly and the sauce was amazing. Highly recommend FM and definitely rec the filet.
