Coffee and baked goods on Croatan Highway (US-158) in Kitty Hawk, open early to early evening every day
Front Porch Cafe sits directly on North Croatan Highway (US-158) in Kitty Hawk — the inland highway that carries traffic the length of the northern Outer Banks, not the oceanfront Beach Road strip closer to the water. The location puts it within easy reach of both the Currituck Sound side and the beach side of the island, since Kitty Hawk — like Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head — is barely more than a mile wide between the two waters. It's a straightforward cafe-and-bakery stop, the kind of place that's easy to build into a morning before a beach day or a walk over at Jockey's Ridge.
The cafe keeps the same hours seven days a week, open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., which covers an early coffee run and a mid-afternoon stop equally well. Pricing lands in the moderate range for the area. Being right on US-158 rather than off on a side street makes it a convenient pull-off for anyone already driving through Kitty Hawk, with baked goods available to grab and take with you if you're not staying.

The coffee was okay, but I’m mainly writing this review because of the experience with the staff. The cashier was incredibly kind, and it seemed like she was new. Unfortunately, the other employees were being rude to her and were busy talking with each other instead of preparing orders. I waited about 20 minutes for a simple vanilla iced coffee. After I finally asked when it would be ready, I overheard one of the employees ask, “What size did she need?” which made it seem like my order hadn’t even been started. The shop wasn’t busy at the time, so the wait was especially surprising. I really felt bad for the cashier because she was friendly and doing her best, but the rest of the team’s behavior left a poor impression.

We recently spent a week in Kitty Hawk and I had the pleasure of visiting Front Porch Cafe every morning. The entire staff is amazing and their coffee and specialty drinks are top notch. They make every customer feel special and I look forward to ordering products from them on a regular basis on their website. I can't wait to go back next summer during our annual OBX vacation.
