Our takeout experience from Howard's Pub was a great choice during our visit. Even without dining in, the food traveled well and still captured that laid-back island feel the restaurant is known for.
We started with the calamari, and it was a pleasant surprise for takeout. It arrived crispy and flavorful, not overly greasy, and held its texture better than expected. It was a great way to kick off the meal and definitely worth ordering again.
For the mains, we had the fried fish sandwich with fries, crab cakes with fries, and a kids cheeseburger. Everything was packaged neatly and the order was spot on. The fried fish sandwich was a standout—crispy on the outside, flaky and fresh on the inside, and served on a soft bun that pulled it all together. The fries stayed fairly crisp and were well-seasoned.
The crab cakes were another highlight. They had great flavor and let the crab shine without being overpowered by filler. Paired with fries, it made for a filling and satisfying meal.
The kids cheeseburger was simple, cooked just right, and came with plenty of fries, making it a hit.
Overall, Howard’s Pub delivered a solid takeout experience with quality food, generous portions, and reliable consistency. Definitely a great option when you want something easy and delicious on Ocracoke.
As a repeat customer year after year I must say this is an absolutely wonderful restaurant. Great food, made to order, delivered quickly and hot. Friendly staff that make you feel welcome as soon as you walk in the door. Nice little bar if you just want a drink, large dining room, patio, and ocean view sky deck to enjoy a meal.
They offer burgers, sandwiches, seafood, and more. They have a nice drink selection as well. You will not regret a visit here if you visit Ocracoke Island. Support the local business as they deserve nothing but the best.
I was here last week for my birthday and I spoke with who I assume was a manager and he was really nice. I bought some merchandise and dinner. He surprised me with a t-shirt from their 35th anniversary that they had left over from last year when he saw I was wearing my 30th anniversary shirt. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Howard's. They're a must-have restaurant on the Outer Banks especially if you take a trip to Ocracoke Island.
I donated one of my expired license plates to the restaurant several years ago and found it still on display with the hundreds of others people have donated over time. I highly recommend. You will not be disappointed! And your supporting a local mom-n-pop place where the money stays right there on Ocracoke!
I enjoyed the grilled catch of the day (red drum) with Mac and cheese and hush puppies. It was an amazing meal. The drum was perfectly prepared, the Mac and cheese was the best I ever had, and the hush puppies were perfect. It's a great atmosphere with the flags and patches adorning the walls. I was pleased to see a patch from my old (retired) department was still there from a visit many many years ago! Drop by. Okracoke in general is a great visit. But eat at the best! Howard's Pub! Wonderful food, atmosphere, and service!!
First time here, my wife & I heard about it, thought we'd check it out.
We were not disappointed! Catch of the day fish sandwich was excellent. Service was great. Cool atmosphere.
Stopped by for dinner on a Thursday and was surprised they weren't busy (late April). Our server did a good job but didn't try to be friendly. I think we got charged for split checks...I guess that's what the "processing fee" was even though I paid in cash. I had the Mahi sandwich and it was good. It came with a side. The hush puppies are very good so I recommend at least getting a side of them.
