Kill Devil Rum

Kill Devil Rum is the tasting room for Outer Banks Distilling, a craft rum producer on Budleigh Street in Manteo, over on Roanoke Island rather than out among the beach towns. It's a small-batch operation — spirits made and poured in the same building — and a useful stop if you want to see a different side of the Outer Banks' economy than surf shops and seafood houses.

Roanoke Island runs on a slower, more historical clock than the barrier-island strip, and this tasting room's schedule reflects that: closed Sunday and Monday, open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you're coming over the Washington Baum Bridge from the beach side for the day, it's worth building your visit around those hours rather than assuming beach-town retail schedules apply.
