Lost Colony Tavern

A Roanoke Island tavern that borrows its name from the island's oldest unsolved mystery

About

Lost Colony Tavern sits in downtown Manteo on Roanoke Island, reached from the beach towns via the Washington Baum Bridge at Whalebone Junction — a quick crossing that puts you in a different kind of Outer Banks, built around a walkable harbor district rather than a beach strip. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with a $$ price point, it's a straightforward stop for a drink or a casual meal between downtown Manteo's waterfront and the historic sites toward the island's north end.

The name nods to the island's defining story: the 1580s Roanoke Colony, England's first attempt at a permanent New World settlement, whose fate after 1587 has never been confirmed. It remains one of the enduring open questions in American history, and it turns up throughout Roanoke Island's place names and local color — this tavern's name included.

  • Type: Bar and tavern
  • Price range: $$

Loud, slow service, warm beer. Beer chees was not to our liking at all.

We stopped at this outdoor space because we had our pup. Seated quickly but then server was delayed. Almost left then he showed up and the experience went up from there. Food and drinks arrived quickly, the offer a pup bowl with chicken and veggies (not on menu so ask) it was full of fresh boiled chicken and mixed veggies. Our girl devoured it! (They should offer the option for toddlers). We had the Jamaican Jerked wings and fried pickles (my weakness). Food was delivered promptly and hot. Thanks Josh (our server) for turning our visit into a good experience.

Cute little place to stop for a quick bite or a few drinks! Food was good, drinks were good, and it’s a nice little spot to hang out.

Food here is excellent! They have a very small place so you may encounter wait times but they do have outdoor eating. You can visit local shops and walk the waterfront before or after you eat. Parking gets filled quickly but highly recommend this pub.
