Surf and turf dining on NC-12 in Buxton, closed Monday and Tuesday
Rusty's Surf & Turf is a sit-down restaurant on NC-12 in Buxton, the Hatteras Island village anchored by the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the maritime forest of Buxton Woods just inland. The name spells out the menu concept directly — local seafood paired with steak — and the $$ price range keeps it accessible for a family dinner after a day at the beach or the lighthouse grounds.
Rusty's doesn't list specific opening and closing times, and like a lot of dining on Hatteras Island, hours can shift by season — it's worth calling ahead at (252) 995-4184 or checking the restaurant's website before making the drive down NC-12, particularly in the shoulder months or if a storm has the road under watch.
Buxton sits roughly in the middle of the island's string of villages, making Rusty's a reasonably central dinner stop for anyone staying nearby or passing through on a day trip to the lighthouse.

Charging $66 for an under seasoned tough steak, while burning my wife’s fish dish. This place used to have quality, unfortunately that has washed away in the surf. RIP Rusty’s.

I’ve tried a few options (entrees and appetizers). Everything is really good. You can’t skip this place when you come to visit. The coconut mahi mahi bites are great. And the bourbon meatballs.

Best food we’ve had in OBX. We came here our first night in town, and as much as I like to visit new pleases, we’ve now eaten here twice this trip. This is not your traditional surf & turf - it exceeds all expectations. Oh, and the fried green tomatoes are the best I’ve ever had. An absolute must.
