Sugar Shack Fish Market Oyster Bar and Grill

Fresh catch, a raw bar, and a grill on Nags Head's Beach Road — no frills, just seafood

About

Sugar Shack Fish Market Oyster Bar and Grill sits on South Virginia Dare Trail in Nags Head, along the Beach Road corridor just off the Atlantic. It's built around exactly what the name promises: a seafood market case, a raw bar, and a grill, run as a casual, no-frills stop rather than a formal dining room.

That format fits the setting. This stretch of Nags Head is deep in beach-town territory, and a market-and-grill hybrid means you can walk in for a quick raw bar plate or settle in for a full seafood dinner. The $$ price range keeps it approachable for a family meal without turning it into a special-occasion splurge.

  • Fish market case and raw oyster bar on site
  • Casual, walk-in atmosphere typical of the Beach Road strip
  • Open daily from 10:30 in the morning until 9 at night, covering lunch straight through dinner
  • $$ price range

Because it's on Virginia Dare Trail rather than the Croatan Highway/US-158 side of town, it's a convenient dinner stop if you're staying beachside in Nags Head and would rather not cross over to the highway strip to eat.

My wife and I ordered the 2 item seafood platters to go. She got the fish of the day (which came in small bites, which we thought was odd) and popcorn shrimp. I ordered large shrimp and oysters plus a fried calamari appetizer. We also ordered hush puppies with some type of sweet butter as well. I would say the food temperature was warm at best. The hush puppies were the only actual hot item we received. BTW, our weekend beach house was just 2.5 miles away and the food wasn't ready when I got there to pick it up so I expected it to be piping hot. Wouldn't you? The portions were very small. Neither of our combo platter boxes were even close to full. I got french fries as my side and got 10-12 fries. We spent just under $90 dollars and we were both quite disappointed. I wouldn't say the food was bad, just very plain. I'm sure there are better options out there for your money. I'm posting photos prior to taking any bites.

Fun little place that was convenient for a fast bite to eat & reasonably priced. Ordered coconut shrimp but it was SO good & fresh, we debated for a moment & ordered another crunchy basket of deliciousness. Their clam chowder was excellent. We order this everywhere we travel to try different regional versions. Sugar Shack's is a clear broth but so rich & flavorful & loaded with the necessities. Could have eaten a gallon. Highly recommend.

The grilled mahi sandwich was delicious. Coconut shrimp were top-notch. Would definitely recommend this restaurant. Service was great and staff very friendly.

Ate here based on mixed reviews, so here's another one to throw into the bowl. ATMOSPHERE: This place is a seafood market as well as a casual restaurant. The inside is freezing cold like a market, but we wanted to sit outdoors regardless because of the view. There's great views of the bay under a trellised patio. We saw a shrimper at work too. Expect to be busy shooing flies while eating. FOOD: Clam Chowder It's not New England nor Manhattan style. It's brownish in color and tastes like clam beef vegetable soup. Good but not what I was expecting. Shack Attack Po' Boy This sandwich is way too big. I don't think anyone can open their mouth that wide. I ate with a fork and tossed the bread. It contains fried flounder, shrimp, scallops & oysters on a roll spread with marinara sauce and drizzled with an Italian dressing-Tabasco sauce and topped with shredded lettuce, and potato chips on the side. Unfortunately it lacked any sort of flavor or personality. Large Shrimp 10 or so lightly breaded and deep-fried shrimp and shoestring fries. The breading isn't your usual thick & frozen breadcrumb variety which was awesome, because I can cook that at home! It came with a mildly spicy & peppery sauce for dipping. This dish is way better than the sandwich. SERVICE: You order & pay at the counter and your food is delivered. The guys in there were very patient and helpful. OVERALL: Nice views, prices are average, portions are generous. Pass on the sandwiches and stick to the grilled & fried items.
