While in the OBX for our wedding, we spent a few extra days with family. My SIL really wanted to get ice cream, but we didn't make it to any until our last full day there. After visiting the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, we stopped at Sweet Seas as it was close by and was made locally. There were plenty of ice cream flavors to choose from, but all four of us got the Nutella. I had it with Heath (perfect crunch addition), my BIL had it plain, and my husband and SIL had affogatos. The espresso was done really well - if you don't want an affogato, you should get an espresso drink if you like coffee at all. The ice cream held up really well in both the affogato and the heat of the summer. There isn't a place to sit inside, but there are plenty of benches in the shopping area and several were in the shade. I sat in a shady spot with the small ice cream (which is a good size) and it barely melted before I finished it. The ice cream was really creamy and delicious. It was probably good for our waistlines that we didn't find it until the last day because we definitely would've gone back multiple times!
Sweet Seas is the best in every way! They offer locally roasted coffee and homemade, small-batch ice cream. Dallas and Brian gave us excellent recommendations. Cute little shop! A gem by the ferry.
My review is based on the service alone. We visited on 8/26 when we were in the area. There were no customers inside when we walked in - and the server stood up from behind the counter and immediately acted like we were an inconvenience. No greeting or anything, which didn't initially matter too much. There were 4 adults and two kids in our group. We started to look at the menu and were kind of saying the options out loud amongst each other to decide what sounded good - and in doing so - she assumed that was what we wanted. So, she started making two of the drinks while we were still deciding - both the same type of drinks - and as we are looking at the menu, and she had her back to our group - she asked about certain toppings. One of us said yes to the toppings and the other didn't hear her, so she then whipped around and in a VERY snotty manner asked again and was rude about it. It got awkward enough that two of us went to stand outside. Someone else in our group pronounced "affagato", and she corrected her in a rude and dry manner. Then one of the kids was looking at the ice cream to decide what she wanted, and she very aggressively started just listing them out like we didn't understand the signs. We got our drinks and paid, and all went outside to sit down. The four of us that were adults immediately agreed that she was extremely rude and unprofessional during the whole interaction. It was very obvious that she was in a bad mood or did not want to be there.
Side note - the coffee was good. Service was not.

Most delicious ice cream in the OBX!! Handmade, great flavor selection, and you can tell the owner loves what he does. Nice strong coffee options as well. You gotta check it out!!!
