Tavern on 12 sits directly on NC-12 in Frisco, the small Hatteras Island village between Buxton and Hatteras village, inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It's a moderately priced ($$) restaurant — the kind of straightforward, sit-down option worth knowing about if you're based anywhere along this end of the island and don't want to drive back up toward the lighthouse or down to the ferry docks just to eat.

Frisco is a quieter stop than Buxton to its north, with fewer dining options overall, which makes a restaurant serving lunch through dinner six days a week a genuinely useful anchor for the village. It's also a reasonable stop before or after time on the Frisco Campground trails or a day on the ORV beach ramps nearby.

NC-12 is the only road linking Frisco to the rest of Hatteras Island, and it closes during storms with some regularity — worth building slack into your plans if you're visiting during hurricane season (June–November), or calling ahead to confirm hours around a forecasted storm.

This place had the best BBQ I've ever had in my entire life, it was clean on the inside and the staff was nice. Definitely a place to stop if you're in the area.

We got there an hour before closing, so we only ordered some Hatteras clam chowder, pimento mac and cheese and a slice of white chocolate blueberry cheesecake, but will definitely be back! Everything we ordered was delicious and all the food around us looked amazing! The bartenders were the best!!! 😁 Can't wait to come back next year when we have more time! Definitely recommend!

We stay at the campground right next door and frequent Tavern on 12 when we are here. Never had a bad meal. Everything on their menu is exceptional. Our favorites are the pizza, crabcake sandwich, the Oysters Rockefeller, and the clam chowder. There is usually a wait, but it's worth it!
