Brewery & Bar

The Bonzer Shack

A Beach Road brewery and bar in Kill Devil Hills, open late every day but Tuesday

About

The Bonzer Shack sits on Virginia Dare Trail — the Beach Road corridor that runs along the oceanfront through Kill Devil Hills — and it's categorized as a brewery and bar with a full kitchen behind it. That's the draw here: beer, food, and a bar to sit at, all in one casual spot on the oceanfront side of town.

Hours & Location

  • Open daily except Tuesday, with the bar and kitchen running from 11:30 a.m. until midnight
  • Located on the Beach Road side of Kill Devil Hills — the oceanfront route, not the Croatan Highway bypass — so it sits close to the water rather than set back from it
  • Moderate price range ($$), casual enough to walk in without a reservation

Kill Devil Hills' Beach Road has long been the strip where beachgoers land after a day in the water, and a bar-and-kitchen combo like this one fits that pattern — a place to grab a beer and something to eat without leaving the oceanfront side of town. It's closed Tuesdays, so plan an evening here for any other day of the week.

Loved the vibe both inside and out with both the decor and upbeat music and the food was great👍 We got the gouda grits cake appetizer and the ribeye steak tacos and fish tacos which were amazing! Great place!!

We’ve been here multiple times and never have had a bad experience. This time around was different.. I’m not sure if owners changed or management but the food was lower quality. We got shrimp tacos and there were quite literally only three pieces of shrimp. The fries are dry and bland as well. Overall for the price this was not good. Very disappointed as we’ve been here before and it was excellent. Not sure what happened this time.

Horrible first experience. Came in today with a party of 9. No inside seating- no big deal. So we go to the outdoor seating where there were no other parties. The host was hesitant on wanting to seat us. We sat outside for 20 minutes when another party joined outside. They ended up getting their order and drinks ordered before another waitress came outside to acknowledge our party. We were swiftly asked why we were sitting at two separate tables when we finally were acknowledged (we had 9 people… large people… there was obviously no way we could all smush up together at the same table). Also, it’s 2 PM on a Wednesday… not that busy of a time. When explaining we couldn’t all fit at the same table, she advised she could find a bench to accommodate us at the table together. Why? We were fine at two picnic tables. She then proceeds to hesitate and tells me that it’s “too much” to serve us at separate tables (even though our tabs were separate, which we also let her know ahead of time. She continued to press the issue that it was “too much”. When I asked our party if they wished to stay here or go due to her hesitation, everyone quickly decided to go elsewhere because of the pisspoor service right off the bat. Mind you, she then advises we should go down the road to another local competitive restaurant that could “easily seat us”. Again, we had no issues sitting separately- they were upset with how large our party was. The fact that they’d rather refer us somewhere else versus to serve us at two separate tables was insane. Why refer us to another restaurant versus serving us? Won’t be back…
