About

The Froggy Dog is a brewery and bar on NC-12 in Avon, one of the villages strung along Hatteras Island within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It's open every day of the week, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and sits in the $$ price range — a straightforward, repeatable stop rather than a special-occasion night out.

Avon falls roughly at the midpoint of the island, with NC-12 as the only road connecting it to Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo to the north and Buxton and Hatteras village to the south. That road closes during storms with some regularity here, so it's worth checking conditions before making a special trip. Buxton, home to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, is further down NC-12 to the south — the lighthouse itself is currently closed for climbing due to a cast-iron bracket issue discovered during restoration, so budget for viewing it from the ground rather than climbing it. Given the reliable daily hours, The Froggy Dog is an easy stop to plan around on that stretch of the island.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Restaurant with Great Food — and Even Better People! We had lunch at The Froggy Dog Restaurant in the Outer Banks on August 20, and while the food and experience were wonderful, it’s what happened after we left that will make this restaurant unforgettable to us. Our waitress, Logan, was absolutely fantastic. She was friendly, attentive, and helped make our lunch a great experience. Unfortunately, in the excitement of getting back on the road, I accidentally left behind something very special to me — my favorite water bottle, covered with decals from every National park we have visited. We were traveling in our RV and were already well on our way back home to Kentucky before I realized it was missing. I immediately called The Froggy Dog, and thankfully they had found my bottle and told me I could stop by anytime to pick it up. When I explained that we were already traveling home and on a tight schedule to make our next stop, they went above and beyond. After putting me on hold, Liza got on the phone. She understood that this wasn’t “just a water bottle” to me — Although mailing forgotten items isn’t something they normally do, she showed an incredible amount of kindness and compassion. She took my address and personally mailed my bottle all the way back to me in Kentucky. I was happy to Venmo the shipping cost — plus a tip, of course! In a world where kindness sometimes seems hard to find, the people at The Froggy Dog reminded me that there are still wonderful people who genuinely care and are willing to go out of their way for someone else. Liza, and everyone at The Froggy Dog — thank you from the bottom of my heart. You didn’t just return a water bottle. You returned something filled with memories. We will never forget your kindness, and the next time we’re in the Outer Banks, The Froggy Dog will absolutely be at the top of our list. Highly recommend this restaurant — not only for a great meal, but because it’s run by truly exceptional people. ❤️🐸 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Restaurant with Great Food — and Even Better People! Liza, you rock!!

Honestly, one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had. The service was already not great, but finding THREE long hairs in our food made it so much worse. When we brought it up to our manager instead of apologizing or even trying to handle the situation professionally, he basically argued with us and told us that we “never found hairs” and that they’ve “never had hairs in their food.” Apparently, according to him, this establishment has somehow never had a single hair end up in anyone’s food. On top of that, we could hear the server talking about us, which was extremely unprofessional and honestly made the situation even more uncomfortable. When we started asking who actually runs the place and whether we could speak to someone in charge or see the kitchen, we were basically told that we could pay our bill and leave. If a customer finds three hairs in their food, the appropriate response is to apologize, take the complaint seriously, and fix the situation—not argue with them, talk about them behind their backs, and then tell them to leave when they ask questions. Definitely won’t be coming back. There are way too many restaurants to spend money somewhere that treats customers like this. Also not worth 600.

The food was good. The portions were mid. The service was quick but I visited in lat August ( off season). There was live music on the deck. Something about the ice in Avon makes all the drinks taste gross. Sorry Avon.
