The SaltBox Cafe sits on Colington Road in Kill Devil Hills, off the main Beach Road/Croatan Highway corridor and headed toward Colington Island — the quieter, sound-side pocket of town known for its harbor and marsh views rather than oceanfront bustle. It's a lunch-driven operation: doors open at 11:30am and close at 2:30pm most days of the week, with Sundays running earlier, from 9am to 2pm, more of a late-breakfast-into-lunch window. Tuesdays it's closed entirely, so plan around that if you're making a special trip out.
Because it's tucked off the primary tourist corridor, this is more of a locals'-pace stop than a boardwalk destination — worth building into a day that includes a swing out toward Colington Island rather than a quick stop between beach and hotel. Holy cow this place is incredible. Been coming to the OBX for 13 years now and first met Chef Sprinkles when he was in Corolla. He most certainly has not lost his touch. The sweet, calm ambiance, the piano playing, the quality of the food. Officially my favorite restaurant in Obx. Cannot recommend enough!

We ate here two nights in a row because it was that fantastic. Great service at the bar and we walked right in on a Friday and Saturday night. We had delicious drinks, split two different salads on each night and indulged in the amazing thai coconut pumpkin she crab soup. Wow. We had crab cakes, tuna special and then back for more crab cakes. This was such a great find. loved every bite.
