Toucana Grill

A moderately priced grill in Hatteras village, open five days a week near the Ocracoke ferry

About

Toucana Grill sits along NC-12 in Hatteras village, near the south end of Hatteras Island where the highway runs out at the docks for the ferry crossing to Ocracoke. It's a moderately priced ($$) option worth knowing about when you're mapping out meals for this stretch of the island, where dining choices thin out compared to the villages to the north. The name points to a casual, grill-focused menu rather than a formal sit-down spot.

The schedule is the main thing to plan around: Toucana Grill is closed Monday and Tuesday, then open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. That's a daytime-into-early-evening window, so it works better for lunch or an early dinner than a late-night stop. If you're routing through Hatteras village on your way to or from the Ocracoke ferry, it's worth checking that your visit lands on one of the open days. Current hours and menu details are posted on their website, which is the best source to confirm before making the trip, since hours at small Hatteras Island restaurants can shift with the season.

Superb food truck cuisine. The shrimp tacos and L A Smashburger for first rate. I can’t recommend them more highly. Also the onion rings were exceptionally good as well. Finally, the fish tacos were delicious and hit with the family also. We showed up late in the day, putting a rather large order and they had it done quickly, and we brought home dinner for the entire multifamily crew at our place. I must say finding toucan Grill was a very pleasant surprise!

Toucana was absolutely amazing and easily one of the best food stops I’ve had on the Outer Banks. I had the smash burger with fries, the house made hibiscus lemonade, and finished with the strawberries and cream dessert, which is tres leches inspired. Everything was fantastic. The smash burger was cooked perfectly, and the fries absolutely deserve a mention. They came out piping hot, crispy, and perfectly seasoned. Seriously some of the best fries I’ve had in a while. The house-made hibiscus lemonade was super refreshing and paired perfectly with the meal. Definitely do not skip dessert either. The strawberries and cream was incredible and the perfect way to finish everything off. A few of the things I ordered seemed to be specials that aren’t on the regular menu all the time, so if you stop by, make sure you ask what the specials are that day. You definitely don’t want to miss something good. The chef, Tyler, clearly knows what he’s doing. Toucana is the perfect stop whether you’re waiting to catch the Ocracoke ferry or just getting off and looking for something great to eat. I already can’t wait to come back and work my way through the rest of the menu. Highly recommend!

Grabbed some fish tacos on the way to the ferry, very refreshing and not too heavy with good flavor. Fish was excellent, would grab and go again.
