Whalehead Brewery serves craft beer alongside a full food menu on Albacore Street in Corolla, open daily from 11:30am to 9pm for both lunch and dinner. It's a solid stop for anyone spending the day in Corolla's northern stretch of the Outer Banks — sightseeing at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and Whalehead Club, walking the trails at Pine Island or Currituck Banks, or just coming off the beach and looking for a cold pint and a hot plate instead of cooking dinner at the rental. The vibe skips the soundside polish of Duck a few miles south; this reads more like a straightforward taproom-and-kitchen setup, easy to walk into straight off the sand.

Planning Your Visit

Corolla gets busy in peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), so expect a wait during prime dinner hours in July and August. Shoulder season — April, May, September, October — is quieter and easier for grabbing a table, with the same menu and beer list either way.

The food was very good, and live music was nice, however, the beer is priced per ounce, and the self-pouring taps run fast and foamy. (Make sure the tap is off before you swipe your bracelet). After you clear the head on your mug, you can easily pay $20 for a single glass of beer. From an alcohol standpoint, it's a tourist trap. However, I would add that the manager was very cordial when I didn't understand my bill, and he was even so kind as to show me the calibration system, which is impressive. Still, I prefer a traditional bartender and not to get charged per drop of beer.

Pros: foods great Cons: the beer is self pouring and the first three ounces are straight foam/head regardless of what type of glass or pouring style you take and please be ready to pay for that foam - a dollar an ounce, to be exact. So if you want mid quality beer and pay out of the nose for 6-7 ounces of beer at a 10 ounce price - go here.

So glad Corolla finally has a place like this that’s so centrally located. I went four times during a recent weeklong stay in Corolla. I only wished they stayed open a bit later, at least on weekends.
