Aunt Phoebes Marsh

Aunt Phoebe's Marsh is a name on the map more than a place to walk to today. It was once a natural wetland behind the old village of Rodanthe, back when Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo were three separate, heavily wooded settlements linked mostly by narrow creeks and footbridges rather than a paved road. According to the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Civic Association's own history of the area, the marsh sat in what is now the stretch of the village covered by an abandoned theme park, waterslide, go-cart tracks, and campgrounds — one of several pieces of the original landscape lost as the village grew.

There's no trailhead, boardwalk, or interpretive sign marking it. If you're passing through this part of Rodanthe, you're standing near the footprint of a wetland that's largely gone rather than a marsh you can explore firsthand. It's worth knowing about anyway, as a reminder of how much this stretch of Hatteras Island has shifted over the generations — the same combination of storms, development, and a barrier island narrowing underfoot that keeps reshaping every village along NC-12, from Rodanthe down to Hatteras village.
