Avalon Pier runs straight out into the Atlantic from N. Virginia Dare Trail in Kill Devil Hills, one of a handful of classic wooden fishing piers that give this stretch of Beach Road its identity. It's a fishing pier first — rod and reel over the surf, the kind of pier-house setup with rentals, bait, and tackle that's standard up and down this coast — and it keeps long hours, open daily from 6 in the morning until midnight.

Spot, spanish mackerel, bluefish, and drum move through these waters depending on the season, and the regulars who show up before sunrise tend to know the pattern better than anyone working a boat offshore. You don't need a rod to get something out of it, either — walking out to the end puts you well past the breakers, with a long, open view up and down the beach and one of the better spots on this part of the Outer Banks to watch the sun come up over open water. Shoulder-season mornings, before the summer crowds arrive, are an especially good time to catch it quiet.

What a wonderful gem on the outer banks. A place where shoes are truly optional and one can wonder on to this creaky worn in pier right off the beach. The bar is quant and local. Aside from the occasional live band and adorable arcade the bar offers true beach entertainment. Watching the fish swim by as you sip your beer is a luxury most bars wish they offered. When we showed up we cooled off with some coconut SUNBOYS which was the perfect drink after a Long Beach day. As we walked to the end of the pier we saw bait fish darting about. When we reached the end of the pier we saw two stingrays playing in the water which was just the cherry on top. Cannot wait to come back and see more animals as happy as the humans watching them from above.

Took a stroll down memory lane. My dad and grandpa used to fish off that same pier when I was young. Got some good photos of the family and of course played some pinball. Personally, I really think charging the $2 just to walk out on the pier, not to fish, could be ended, but we paid it and had a nice walk out.
