Guided 4x4 tours onto the beach to see Corolla's wild Spanish mustangs in their own territory

About

Back Country Safari Horse Tours operates out of Corolla's Light Town Center on Austin St, running guided 4x4 tours onto the beach north of town to see the wild Spanish mustangs that call this stretch of the Outer Banks home. Past the point where the paved road ends, the only way in is by driving on the open sand — a real 4x4-only area, not a metaphor — and this outfit specializes in getting visitors out there without needing their own truck.

The wild horses

The horses roaming Corolla's northern beaches are feral descendants of Spanish mustangs believed to have arrived with early colonial settlers centuries ago. They're wild animals, not tourism props, and their range is managed and protected by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, which keeps a legal buffer distance between people and horses. A guided tour with an experienced local operator is a sensible way to see them without crowding them or getting a rental vehicle stuck in soft sand.

  • Tours depart from Light Town Center in Corolla
  • Open daily, with shorter hours on Mondays and a longer window Tuesday through Sunday
  • Listed as a tour operator and travel agency

Worth booking ahead during peak summer season, when demand for wild horse tours runs highest.

Such an awesome tour with an exceptional tour guide, Casey. Casey provided such knowledge that many of us on the tour got to learn new things today. He answered all of the questions we had in such depth. The ride itself was very accommodating for my wife and i's 3 year old son. We provided the car seat and he enjoyed every moment of the tour!! We got to see many horses included one that was only a week and a half old. Driving along the shoreline was pretty cool, and the breeze itself along the ride helped with the heat. I would recommend this tour to everyone!

This is a must see - must do activity on the outer banks! Not only did we get to see the wild horses but we got a brief history of the area, we drove on the beach, saw amazing one of a kind sunsets, and had a great family night out! Our tour guide was really great - he shared so much interesting information and went above and beyond when looking for the horses! We had an excellent night, definitely worth it and we'll be back next year!

We had a great experience, company is amazing. If anyone looks at Lynn Williams 1 star review, ignore it. They messed up and booked several reservations and expected the company would know they were a party of 13. The company went above amd beyond to accommodate them. Back to our tour, we spent way more time out looking g for the horses then we expected. Amazing company, will recommend over anyone else. Sorry Karen...I mean Lynn...yall messed up and its not on the company.
