Cape Hatteras Welcome Sign

The roadside marker where South Nags Head's Beach Road gives way to Cape Hatteras National Seashore

(9)
Nags Head, NC

About

The Cape Hatteras Welcome Sign sits along S Virginia Dare Trail in Nags Head, right around the point where the continuous beach-town development of the northern Outer Banks — Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head — starts to thin out toward the undeveloped, federally protected stretch of Cape Hatteras National Seashore to the south. It's a roadside marker rather than a destination with its own facilities, but it's a genuine landmark for anyone tracking the shift from town to seashore along this drive.

This section of South Nags Head runs the Beach Road (Virginia Dare Trail) close along the dune line, with the Atlantic on one side and Roanoke Sound not far to the west. True to its billing as a "Points of Interest" stop rather than an attraction, there's no visitor center or paid access here — just the sign and a pull-off, worth a quick photo if you're already passing through on the way toward Whalebone Junction and the Seashore beyond.

  • Located on S Virginia Dare Trail (the Beach Road), not the US-158/Croatan Highway bypass
  • A brief photo stop, not a staffed attraction — no listed hours or amenities
  • Marks the rough dividing line between the northern beach towns and Cape Hatteras National Seashore to the south
