Carova Beach marks the far northern edge of the Outer Banks, well past the point where the road stops being a road. NC-12 ends at the north side of Corolla, and from there the only way forward — into Carova, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach, and on toward the Virginia line — is by driving a 4x4 vehicle directly on the open sand. There's no pavement and no street grid in the usual sense, just a corridor of beach and the sandy lanes that connect the off-road houses set back among the dunes.

Wild Horses

Carova is best known as the year-round range of the Corolla wild horses, a herd of Spanish mustangs descended from colonial-era stock and protected by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. They move freely along the dunes, the beach, and the maritime scrub between houses — this is genuinely their territory, not a managed exhibit, so sightings vary from one visit to the next.

Planning a Visit

A 4WD vehicle is required — there's no other way to reach Carova by land
Check tide times and recent beach-driving conditions before heading up; soft sand and high tide can strand an unprepared vehicle
Stay at least 50 feet from any horse you spot, per Corolla Wild Horse Fund guidelines
Air down your tires for sand and bring basic recovery gear if you're new to beach driving

It was great! We went to celebrate my mom 95th birthday. We stayed at the Mark Twain Oceanfront on the 4x4 Beach. We saw the wild horses and had fun on what turned out cloudy, rainy week.

Beautiful 😍 4x4 beach definitely learned our lesson will be letting the air out of tires but everyone had an wonderful amazing time must check it out but also check out the low and high tide times
