A soundside boat ramp in the heart of Carova, reachable only by 4x4 beach driving
Carova Beach Park & Boat Ramp is a Currituck County-run soundside access point tucked into the heart of Carova, the stretch of Outer Banks beach community that starts where the pavement ends. There's no numbered highway out here — Ocean Pearl Rd sits well north of Corolla's Currituck Beach Lighthouse and Whalehead Club, reachable only by driving a 4x4 vehicle up the open beach.
Skip the sedan. This park sits in the true 4x4-only zone, so a vehicle with real ground clearance and low tire pressure for sand is non-negotiable — check tide and sand conditions before heading up, and budget extra time since the "road" is the beach itself. Along the way, keep an eye out for the wild Spanish mustangs the Corolla Wild Horse Fund manages throughout this stretch; they roam freely and have the right of way.
As a county park and boat ramp, this is a functional access point rather than a destination with amenities to browse — it puts anglers, kayakers, and boaters directly onto Currituck Sound without the long haul back toward Corolla's more developed public landings. Great little park area! We were attracted to it by the possibility to launch kayaks and explore Knotts Island Bay area and it did not disappoint at all. The restrooms were clean and operational. Even though we didn't need the playground, it looked to be in a good condition. Oh, and the wild horses of course!

Such a neat place! We came in by boat and saw wild horses on our way in! It is about a quarter mile walk on a sand road to get to the beach. There is a large sand dune to climb to obtain access to the beach so be aware if any in your party have difficulty walking uphill.

Clean outdoor picnic area with charcoal grills. 2 outdoor showers for washing off sand. Covered picnic tables if needed. Redone boat dock for 2026. Facility's are clean every time we go.

Definitely need 4x4 vehicle to get her but it's so beautiful. Had lunch here and only place with a bathroom. It's been a very nice trip

This was such a cool place and we’re so excited by the many wild horses we saw roaming the area. We took Bob’s wild horse tours for our visit and they helped us navigate the area so well. Check them out for your ride along experience. Beach is definitely busy and full of energy. Just be careful on the sand highway so you don’t end up stuck like the Kia Soul we saw trying to dig out.
