Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Gateway Visitor Center

On the north end of Roanoke Island, in the same historic district that holds Fort Raleigh, Elizabethan Gardens, and the Lost Colony, the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Gateway Visitor Center serves as the public information hub for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's refuge holdings across the coastal plain. The National Wildlife Refuge System exists to protect habitat for birds, fish, and other wildlife, and this center is where that mission gets explained to visitors rather than experienced firsthand — it's less a single refuge than a starting point, the place to get oriented before heading out to the marshes, maritime forest, and migratory bird habitat the refuges themselves protect.

Visiting

The center keeps weekday hours, Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm, and is closed Saturday and Sunday — worth checking ahead if a refuge stop is part of a broader day on Roanoke Island that might also include Fort Raleigh or Elizabethan Gardens nearby.
