Where visits to Coastal North Carolina's wildlife refuges begin, on Roanoke Island's historic north end
On the north end of Roanoke Island, in the same historic district that holds Fort Raleigh, Elizabethan Gardens, and the Lost Colony, the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Gateway Visitor Center serves as the public information hub for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's refuge holdings across the coastal plain. The National Wildlife Refuge System exists to protect habitat for birds, fish, and other wildlife, and this center is where that mission gets explained to visitors rather than experienced firsthand — it's less a single refuge than a starting point, the place to get oriented before heading out to the marshes, maritime forest, and migratory bird habitat the refuges themselves protect.
The center keeps weekday hours, Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm, and is closed Saturday and Sunday — worth checking ahead if a refuge stop is part of a broader day on Roanoke Island that might also include Fort Raleigh or Elizabethan Gardens nearby.

Great visitor center with lots of educational exhibits. There is a small movie theater with excellent movies of the local wildlife refuges and the history of Buffalo City, a booming logging and moonshiners town of about 2000 that no longer exists. Kids love “flying” the airplane that offers flyover video of the local refuges. Staff is friendly and helpful always. Stop here first for advice in how to enjoy the local refuges and spend an hour learning about them.

Nice visitors center that represents several WIld Life Refuges. Center was manned by a very informative volunteer. Nice walking trail.

The staff was super both years we have gone. Nice little museum to visit. You may go just to kill a little time and walk out thinking, "I enjoyed that!" Learning is always fun for me, but it's nice when someone does it well on a tight budget.

Most excellent and informative environmental information in the OBX ecosystems!!! The refuge has interactive engaging displays and videos acting as educational tools. The very rare red wolves who live in the alligator River area was particularly eye opening for us as first time visitors! The intern at the desk was friendly, knowledgeable, and very patient with our questions. Definitely worthwhile for family who wish to understand the wildlife who live in the OBX!!

Guy at the desk was very friendly, answering all my questions about local wildlife. Cute gift shop. We enjoyed walking through the displays and seeing what was in the area before we went across the bridge to the refuge.
