Corolla Jeep Adventures

Guided 4x4 tours onto the open beach north of Corolla, where the wild horses still roam

About

Corolla Jeep Adventures runs guided 4x4 excursions out of a spot on Ocean Trail, in the middle of Corolla proper. The appeal is straightforward: north of town, the pavement runs out entirely, and the only way onto that stretch of the Outer Banks is by four-wheel drive. This operator handles the vehicle and the driving.

What the Tours Cover

As a jeep-based tour operator working this end of the island, trips typically head into the open-sand terrain beyond Corolla's paved streets — the same territory managed by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, where the area's wild Spanish mustangs roam free. Riding along for a guided trip means covering shifting sand rather than blacktop, with someone behind the wheel who's used to reading tide lines and beach conditions that change from one day to the next.

Getting There

The listed address puts the business on Ocean Trail (NC-12), the road that carries traffic through Corolla until it simply stops at the town's north end. Because these tours operate beyond that point, on the open beach itself, riders don't need their own 4x4 rig or beach-driving know-how to get a look at that backcountry stretch of the Outer Banks.

Did the ATV tour. It was interesting. Saw a lot of horses. It’s a lovely 90 min ride up the beach. It’s obvious that the owner is an absentee one. They may want to do a better job of overseeing their operations. Maybe fix the website so there aren’t multiple bookings for one vehicle. Maybe pay the front desk person better. So many things.

Our guide Kathy Sue was very friendly and amazing. Our group of six had a fantastic time even with a tiny bit of rain. She showed us all over the area and was very informative. We didn't get to see a ton of wild horses, but that's no ones fault. Definitely a must do adventure and would highly recommend.

We had a great time. Steve was our driver/tour guide. He did a great job. We saw horses, dolphins & a beautiful view on Penny Hill. He was very informative & told interesting stories about the area and its history. The truck we went out in was nice, it had comfortable seats. We all enjoyed it!

We booked months ago and called multiple times in the days before we were scheduled to go. It was pouring outside and when we arrived they said that if we wanted to go we would have to ride in an open top jeep with soaking seats. We were very disappointed and decided not to go on the tour because it would have been miserable. We had already driven an hour and we were upset that they did not call earlier to let us know the situation and save us the drive.

Overall good trip, but the jeep we drove needed some maintenance.
