Protected waterfowl habitat in Corolla's remote north end, where wild horses also range
Currituck National Wildlife Refuge protects a long stretch of marsh, maritime forest, and dune habitat on the northern Outer Banks, established chiefly for migratory waterfowl and other native wildlife moving through the Atlantic Flyway. The refuge's lands extend north from Corolla's historic district into the undeveloped territory beyond where the paved road ends.
Reaching the refuge means driving north past the end of NC-12 onto the open beach — a genuine 4x4-only stretch, not a shortcut through town. High-clearance vehicles, correct tire pressure, and attention to tide and sand conditions are essential; this isn't an area for a standard car.
Refuge lands extend into the same remote stretch where the Corolla wild horses roam — the wild Spanish mustangs managed separately by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, not by the refuge. The two overlap on the map but serve different purposes: one protects waterfowl and native habitat, the other stewards the horse herd.
With no visitor center or posted hours, this is a self-guided destination — good for birders, photographers, and anyone drawn to one of the last truly undeveloped stretches of the Outer Banks.

I took my children and grands here for one of the greatest experiences ever! We stayed in a fabulous home in the refuge. I've always wanted to see the beautiful Spanish wild mustangs, and I wasn't disappointed! We drove on the beach and parked our trucks for the day of swimming and fun in the sun!

Hey ya’ll. Outer Banks horse tour was amazing. Very bumpy but so beautiful. I have never seen a place quite like this. I think next time I’d like to go on ATVs and have more time on the beach. Because it was cold the horses were back up against the houses. From what I understand in the warmer less windy months they are on the beach more. I highly highly recommend a getaway here!!!

Walking through this beautiful space was a perfect way to spend the afternoon. It is incredibly peaceful, and seeing so much untouched nature right by the coast was really special. I loved just wandering around, watching the wildlife, and enjoying the quiet away from the crowds. It is definitely one of my favorite spots to really relax and enjoy the outdoors. The beach is beautiful and so are their horses. They come out walking on the beach anytime .We don't get close but we take a lot of beautiful pictures! The has has a few Sea Turtle nest that are waiting to hatch out. We don't get close but we take a lot of pictures. Nice clean beach .A few shell beds for those that like to collect shells . Dog friendly and you are responsible for your beautiful pet. You can fish all you want to. 4wheel drive only . You will not be disappointed. Some days the water is a sparkling blue some days the water is an emerald green and clear .
