Nags Head's community green space for playgrounds, open lawn, and free events
Dowdy Park sits on S Croatan Hwy in Nags Head, set back from the oceanfront along the town's main highway corridor rather than out on the beach itself. It's a town-owned park built as a gathering spot for residents and visitors alike — a stretch of open green space that this part of the northern Outer Banks, wedged between motels, restaurants, and shops, doesn't have a lot of.
The park has become one of Nags Head's go-to spots for that kind of free, low-key public event — nothing fancy, just a reason to get out of the sun for an evening and be around other people on vacation in the same town. Grounds are open daily, and because it's not on the water, it works best as an easy stop between beach days rather than a planned outing of its own. If you're staying nearby or passing through Nags Head on US-158, it's worth checking the town's current schedule — event evenings draw a noticeably bigger crowd than an ordinary afternoon at the park.

We loved visiting this park while vacationing in the Outer Banks! Not only are the ground well kept, the bathrooms are fabulous and the playground is unique and just the right amount of risky but safe where I didn't feel like I needed to chase my one year old around making sure he doesn't fall off anything. There is also a small walking path around the park with a large greenspace, pickleball courts, basketball, grills and plenty of parking. Highly recommend!

What an AMAZING community park! I love that it is wheelchair accessible and has SO many features including climbing, spinning, swings, pull up bars, field to run around, sand pit, slides, and more! Fit for all ages - even a little toddler spot. It also has free WiFi!

Beautiful park. Great location just up the street from the Bonnet St Beach Access. Renting a house for the week nearby; the park was always active. Live music on Wednesday evening, Farmers Market on Thursday, and always groups of people making use of the walking paths and nice open spaces. Basketball hoops, pickleball court. Hats off the the Town of Nags Head on Dowdy Park, it's a nice addition.

The park itself is great. The people that use it, not so much. Dogs must be on a leash, but I had 2 different dogs running loose that didn't respond to their owners come running up to Oreo who was on a leash. She doesn't like dogs running at her. Their response was, oh they thought you were somewhere else...smh.

This park has it all, concerts, interactive play areas, cute gardens, barbecue, great picnic tables and benches to sit on, you name it. It. They are also public restrooms, and a decent amount of parking. It is right off the main Beach highway and easy to get to. We watched a great concert tonight and the band played under a covered pavilion. On weekdays during the summer, there are great farmers markets here with vendors, selling everything from arts and crafts to food and slushies.
