Island Farm

Island Farm sits right on US-64 as the highway carries you onto Roanoke Island, and it works differently than most historic sites in the area — this is a recreated 1850s farmstead where costumed interpreters actually do the chores rather than stand behind velvet ropes. Heritage-breed animals, a working garden, and a restored farmhouse make up the core of the property, and the pace is unhurried by design.

What's on the Grounds

The farmhouse and surrounding outbuildings are set up to reflect the rhythms of a mid-19th-century Roanoke Island household — seasonal chores, food preservation, textile and craft work, and the care of heritage-breed livestock that would have been common to the period. Interpreters are on hand to explain what they're doing and why rather than deliver a scripted tour, which makes a visit here feel more like observing a working household than touring an exhibit.
