Kite Point is a soundside pull-off on NC-12 in Buxton, sitting between the highway and the Pamlico Sound within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It's one of the recognized launch points along Hatteras Island's soundside wind-sports corridor, where kiteboarders and windsurfers rig up and head out onto water that's typically shallow and flat close to shore — more forgiving for launching and landing than the ocean side of the island. The draw is the wind: this stretch of sound tends to catch a steadier, often stronger breeze than the beach.
Because it's on Hatteras Island, remember that NC-12 closes periodically during storms, and hurricane season (June-November) carries real risk of washouts — worth checking road conditions before a late-summer or fall visit.

Have never had a bad session here, though occasionally the wind will come over the turnout weird. It can definitely get crowded, so keep that in mind. Sometimes difficult to get launched with so many people but it's worth it. It's also a fantastic place to watch the sunset unobstructed, whether you're on or off the water.

This is a lovely spot to enjoy the sunset. If you plan to linger, consider bringing a beach chair and some snacks. Please note that there are no toilets available.

An incredible spot for windsurfing, kite surfing, and all kinds of water sports! 🌊🪁 Kite Point is an absolute gem—especially for beginners or anyone looking to learn. The water here is shallow, warm, and super beginner-friendly, making it perfect for practicing without worry. There’s a consistent breeze that makes kiting and windsurfing a dream! Just below the launch area, there's a fantastic beach with clean bathrooms and outdoor showers—ideal for families with kids who want to splash around in safe, shallow waters. The entire area feels well thought out and welcoming. And let’s not forget the sunsets… they are breathtaking. Golden skies, peaceful water, and kites dancing in the wind—pure magic. 🌅 Highly recommend this spot for anyone who loves the wind, water, and a relaxed vibes!

Can't come to kite point without a kite! 😅 Super pretty and relaxing spot to come to. Got to watch some kite surfing and talk to some locals about how that works. Was just the right amount of secluded, without being completely alone. Have it saved for future plans to come back and relax again!

This is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset and take pictures. There’s a parking lot with easy access to the sound. It’s very accessible and not a far walk at all, and you could even stay in the parking lot and have a great view! The water is shallow and there aren’t many waves so it’s a great place to take small children to swim as well.
