The Little Red Mailbox sits at the Glenmere Avenue beach access in Kill Devil Hills, a small, unassuming stop that's become one of the most quietly beloved traditions on this stretch of the Outer Banks. For decades, beachgoers have left handwritten notes, letters, and poems tucked inside the mailbox — some addressed to no one in particular, some answering a stranger's letter from years before — and anyone who stops by is welcome to read what's there and leave something of their own.
There's no admission, no staff, and nothing to buy — it's simply a mailbox at a public beach access, open around the clock the way any beach access point is. Bring a pen if you want to add to the collection, and expect a short walk over the dune to reach the sand itself, since this is a walk-on access rather than a parking lot right at the water. It's an easy add-on to a morning beach walk in Kill Devil Hills, and a nice reminder that some of the best things on the Outer Banks aren't attractions at all — just a place where people have quietly kept a decades-long conversation going, one note at a time.

If you haven’t experienced the little red mailbox at the glenmere access in kill devil hills than you are missing out! Go anytime you want sit with nature with the ocean in the background and write down your thoughts prayers and messages of hope anything on your mind and sit with gorgeous views around you

Such a compelling story that we couldn't NOT stop to visit this simple mailbox. It was filled to the gills with messages and kind thoughts, and we added ours to the mix. You've just gotta love a town where this could happen!

Handicap accessible, and has a covered gazebo at the top where you can sit and write in the Little Red Mailbox book while overlooking the beach. There is currently no access down to the beach because the stairs were washed out in a storm and not yet replaced.
