North Carolina Highway 12

NC-12 is the only road on Hatteras Island, and it does more work than any two-lane highway should. From the Marc Basnight Bridge over Oregon Inlet, it runs the full length of the island through Cape Hatteras National Seashore, stringing together Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo, then Avon, Buxton, and Hatteras village before ending at the ferry docks for the ride across to Ocracoke. There's no alternate route and no shoulder to speak of in places — just dune, sound, and road.

What You're Actually Driving Through

This stretch is part of the Outer Banks Scenic Byway, and the scenery is the point: open sound views on one side, ocean dune line on the other, with NPS-numbered ORV ramps branching off toward the beach at intervals for permitted 4x4 access. It's a slow, deliberate drive by design, not a bypass.

Why Locals Watch the Weather

Because Hatteras Island is narrower and more exposed than the beaches to the north, NC-12 washes out or closes during storms on a fairly regular basis — not a rare event, but an ongoing fact of life here. It matters most from June through November, with the real risk window in August through October. Check current conditions before a hurricane-season trip, and build slack into travel days if a storm is anywhere near the forecast.
