Ocracoke Island Discovery Center

The Ocracoke Island Discovery Center is the National Park Service's visitor center for this end of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, sitting near Silver Lake Harbor in the village. It's the place to start before heading out to the island's beaches or the pony pasture — exhibits cover the island's natural and maritime history, and rangers on duty can answer questions about beach-driving permits, tide conditions, and seasonal closures.

The center is open daily except Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Given Ocracoke's remoteness and hurricane-season risk (June through November), it's worth calling ahead if you're visiting during storm season, since hours and ferry service can change quickly.
