Ocracoke Preservation Society

The Ocracoke Preservation Society runs a small museum in the village dedicated to keeping the island's working history from disappearing under the tourist trade. The collection centers on photographs, boatbuilding tools, fishing gear, and oral histories donated by families who worked these waters long before ferries made Ocracoke an easy day trip — a record of a community that was, for most of its history, almost entirely cut off from the mainland.
