Open Ponds Trail

Open Ponds Trail runs roughly 4.5 miles one way — about 9 miles if you hike it out and back — through the heart of Buxton Woods, connecting the British Cemetery area near the Buxton Woods Picnic Area to Frisco Campground. It's part of North Carolina's Mountains-to-Sea Trail and one of the longer, more varied hikes on Hatteras Island, alternating between shaded maritime forest, open dune fields, and the shallow interdunal ponds and wetland flats that give the trail its name.

What to Expect

• Flat, sandy tread that shifts between forest canopy and open, sun-exposed pond and dune sections
• No water sources or facilities along the route — carry what you need for the full distance
• Buxton Woods is one of the largest remaining maritime forests on the East Coast, and the trail is a solid spot for birders, especially during spring and fall migration
• Mosquitoes and ticks can be active in warmer months, particularly near the wetter pond sections

Getting There

Access sits near the Buxton Woods Picnic Area off NC-12 on one end and Frisco Campground on the other, so a one-way hike works if you can arrange a shuttle between the two; otherwise plan on the full out-and-back distance. Hatteras Island's storm and weather patterns can affect trail conditions, so it's worth checking with Cape Hatteras National Seashore before heading out.
