Penny's Hill

Penny's Hill sits deep in Corolla's northern backcountry, well past the point where NC-12 gives way to open beach. It's one of the more distinctive landmarks in the 4x4-only stretch north of town — a large, undeveloped sand dune rising out of the maritime scrub and marsh grass, visible for a good distance in every direction. There's no facility here, no staff, no admission — just open natural terrain that's become a familiar checkpoint for off-roaders, wild horse watchers, and anyone exploring the northern 4x4 communities on their own.

Getting there

• Reachable only by driving on the open beach — a real 4x4-only area, unlike the core Outer Banks beaches to the south where beach driving isn't allowed
• High-clearance four-wheel drive is required; there's no paved road access this far north
• Check tide and sand conditions before heading out, especially outside peak season when fewer vehicles have packed the sand

Wild horses nearby

This stretch of the 4x4 beaches is prime territory for the Corolla wild horses, the Spanish mustangs managed by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund that roam freely through the dunes and maritime thicket here. Sightings aren't guaranteed on any given visit, but Penny's Hill and the surrounding terrain are part of the range where they're most often seen. Because access is open and there's no gate or set hours, it can be visited any time — though most people work it into a longer day of beach driving rather than treating it as a standalone stop.
