Roanoke Island Maritime Museum

The shad boat — a flat-bottomed, sharp-sterned workboat developed on Roanoke Island in the 19th century by local boatbuilder George Washington Creef — is the best-documented piece of that story; North Carolina later named it the state's official boat, a rare honor for a regional workboat design.

The museum sits within downtown Manteo's compact, walkable waterfront district, a different setting from the beach-town strip a bridge away — worth folding into a stroll around Shallowbag Bay rather than treating as a standalone stop.
