Salvo Day Use Area

Hatteras Island's main soundside launch for kiteboarding, windsurfing, and paddling on Pamlico Sound

Salvo, NC

About

Salvo Day Use Area is the main soundside access point on this stretch of Hatteras Island, sitting between the village of Salvo and the marsh edge of Pamlico Sound inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It's built around sound access rather than the ocean beach — shallow water and a steady, dependable breeze that made this spot a known name among kiteboarders and windsurfers long before it was known for much else.

On the Water

That shallow, wind-friendly water is why kiteboarding and windsurfing schools send beginners to this part of Hatteras Island, and it works just as well for kayaking, paddleboarding, and shore fishing on calmer days. Ospreys, herons, and pelicans work the marshes along the edges, worth a look even for visitors who aren't getting in the water.

Facilities

  • Large paved parking area with handicap spaces
  • Bathhouse with restrooms and outdoor showers
  • Picnic tables and grills
  • Direct sand access to the sound

The bathhouse and showers run on a seasonal schedule rather than year-round, and like the rest of Hatteras Island, NC-12 access here can be affected by storm flooding during hurricane season — worth a quick check before a shoulder-season visit.

Great quiet place to hang out with the family. Perfect for young kids and dogs, as the water is pretty shallow, no large waves to knock kids over. Also a great place to watch kite boarders on a windy day.

Gorgeous spot, at sundown there are crabs everywhere running around. Great spot to relax by the sound.

Nice, clean park where lots of people were windsurfing. I got some great pictures. There were picnic tables and a restroom, although it was a pit toilet, not flush, but when you gotta go, you gotta go. 😉 I believe there were also changing rooms, but I didn't use them. Nice area for seeing the sound side of the island.

This is a very nice place to access the sound, there is plenty of parking and several picnic spots. Lots of sandy beach area, and the water is low enough for kids to play in safely.

One of our favorite spots on the sound side. Always kept tidy. Picnic tables available. Some shaded areas. Outdoor showers, changing rooms, and bathrooms readily there.
