Sunset Viewpoint @ Outlet Nags Head
A soundside pull-off in Nags Head built for one thing: watching the sun drop over Roanoke Sound
About
The name tells you exactly what you're getting: a stop along Croatan Highway in Nags Head, next to the outlet shopping center, built around one thing — a clear line of sight to the sun going down over Roanoke Sound. It's a detail a lot of first-time visitors miss. Because the barrier island runs north-south, the ocean side of Nags Head faces east and gets the sunrise crowd, while the soundside faces west and is where the color show happens at the end of the day.
Its spot on the Bypass makes it easy to fold into a day that already has you shopping at the outlets or running errands along that stretch of highway — treat it as a quick pull-off rather than a whole separate outing. There's no listed schedule, so the only real planning is checking that evening's sunset time and giving yourself 20-30 minutes of buffer before the light starts changing. As with any soundside view on the northern Outer Banks, clear evenings in shoulder season (spring, fall) tend to produce the sharpest color, while thick summer humidity can flatten it out.

Someone was DEFINITELY thinking. This is PERFECT! Very relaxing just chillin' watching the sunset. Ok, clouds roll in; but, still very relaxing.
