Tallest Sand Dune

Jockey's Ridge State Park holds the tallest natural sand dune system on the East Coast, and the summit is the payoff for the climb. There's no marked trail in the usual sense — you're working your way up loose, shifting sand that the wind rearranges over time, which is part of what makes this dune unlike anything else on the Outer Banks. The dunes aren't fixed in place; they migrate slowly as wind moves sand around the park, so the exact shape and height up top changes gradually year to year.

What the climb gets you

From the summit, the view opens up in both directions at once — Roanoke Sound and the mainland to the west, the Atlantic to the east, with Nags Head's beach towns strung out along the barrier island in between. It's one of the only spots in the region where you get that full sound-to-sea sightline without a boat or a plane, and it draws a crowd near sunset in warmer months.

Before you climb

• Sand holds heat fast — bare feet or flip-flops get uncomfortable on a summer afternoon, so shoes you don't mind filling with sand are the smarter call.
• Hang gliders launch from the dune's slopes as part of lessons based out of the park, so wings overhead are normal, not a surprise.
• The climb is steeper and softer underfoot than it looks from the parking area — give yourself more time than a short, flat walk would take.

This is a natural feature, not a staffed attraction — no ticket booth at the top, just sand, wind, and one of the better views on the northern Outer Banks.
