Guided 4x4 trips into wild-horse country north of Corolla's paved road
Wild Horse Adventure Tours runs guided excursions north from Corolla into the open beach that begins where the pavement ends — the only way in or out of Carova and the other 4x4-only communities. The draw is the herd of wild Spanish mustangs that has run free on this stretch of barrier island for generations, protected and monitored by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. Guests ride along in the company's own off-road vehicle rather than navigating soft sand themselves, with a guide who tracks where the horses tend to graze and how to keep a respectful distance from them.
Tours head out along the unpaved beach corridor north of town, through terrain that's genuinely off-limits to regular passenger cars — a defining feature of this part of Corolla that sets it apart from the core Outer Banks beaches to the south, where driving on sand isn't allowed. Horse sightings aren't guaranteed on any wild-animal tour, but guides follow herd movement daily and route accordingly. Sun protection and a camera are worth bringing; conditions shift with tide and weather, so departure times can move.

Our family visited Corolla for the first time and had an opportunity to take the sunset tour with Jason (our guide). He was witty and super friendly, plus knowledgeable. We enjoyed learning about the wild horse history, the incredible sights of the dunes and seeing the horses. Such a memorable experience and would absolutely do it again!

What an amazing experience. Jason was wonderful. We saw so many beautiful horses and for the first time I saw them on the dunes with a gorgeous sunset background! So worth it! Thanks for a great trip!

This was the perfect experience for a friends bachelorette trip! Our tour guide, Amanda, was so fun! She had a lot of interesting knowledge to share with us and kept us entertained! Seeing the horses in the wild was so cool. And the fact that part of the profits go towards supporting the care of the horses is even better! Great place to go!
