A free roadside nod to Kitty Hawk's place in aviation history, viewable any time along Croatan Highway
The Wright Brothers Mural stands along N Croatan Highway in Kitty Hawk, a public piece of art marking the town's connection to aviation history. There's no admission, no ticket booth, and no set hours — it's outdoor artwork on a public stretch of road, viewable any time you're driving through.
Kitty Hawk's name has been linked to the Wright brothers since December 1903, when their famous telegram reporting the first powered flight was sent from this town, even though the actual flight took off a few miles south at what's now Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills. This mural is a low-key nod to that history, giving Kitty Hawk its own visible marker in a story most visitors associate with the memorial down the road.
It's not a destination that needs an afternoon built around it, but for anyone tracing the region's aviation roots — or just curious why Kitty Hawk shows up in the history books before Kill Devil Hills does — it's an easy, free stop along the way.

I know, I know. It's just a mural on the side of a commercial building. But I'm a sap when it comes to anything about the Wright Brothers.

The mural is very well done. It seems like it is in an odd spot, but GPS was accurate.
