Center Trail (Blue)

A short, blue-blazed loop that's the easiest way into Nags Head Woods Preserve's maritime forest

About

Center Trail is the easiest way into Nags Head Woods Preserve, the maritime forest that runs along the Kill Devil Hills–Nags Head line on the sound side of the barrier island. Blue-blazed and looping out from just past the preserve's main building, it covers roughly a quarter mile — built as an introduction, not a workout, and a good pick for kids, casual walkers, or anyone with limited time before heading back to the beach.

The path crosses a couple of small wooden footbridges and skirts an interdunal pond that's usually loud with bullfrogs and green frogs in warm weather. Deer and raccoon turn up along the route often enough to keep an eye on the tree line, and the canopy mixes maple, sweetgum, and hickory — a genuine hardwood forest, which is unusual this close to open ocean and rare on a barrier island this narrow.

Center Trail also feeds into the preserve's larger network: Sweetgum Swamp Trail branches off for hikers who want to go deeper into the woods, and Blueberry Ridge continues the loop system beyond that. Treat Center Trail as the front door to Nags Head Woods, not a standalone destination.

  • No pets allowed on Center, Sweetgum, or Blueberry Ridge trails
  • Trailhead and parking at 701 West Ocean Acres Drive, Kill Devil Hills
  • Preserve open dawn to dusk daily, no fee, foot traffic only

Best Time to Hike Center Trail (Blue) at Nags Head Woods Preserve

Warm weather brings out the most activity along Center Trail's interdunal pond, which is usually loud with bullfrogs and green frogs once temperatures climb, so a warm-weather visit is the best bet if wildlife sounds are part of the draw. Because the loop is short and sits right at the edge of Nags Head Woods Preserve, it also works well as a quick stop tucked in before or after a day at the beach rather than something that needs a dedicated block of time.
