Getting to Currituck Banks Nature Trail

The trail sits at the north end of Corolla, where a small parking area off the main road gives on-foot visitors access to both the boardwalk and the Maritime Forest Trail inside the Currituck Banks National Estuarine Research Reserve. This lot serves reserve visitors arriving on foot only — it is not a staging area for 4x4 beach trips or airing down tires. Visitors heading to Carova should instead use one of the county lots near the lighthouse for that kind of beach access.

What to Expect on the Currituck Banks Nature Trail

Currituck Banks Nature Trail is the on-foot entrance to the Currituck Banks National Estuarine Research Reserve, at the north end of Corolla where maritime forest and marsh give way to Currituck Sound. The reserve protects nearly 1,000 acres as part of the national system of estuarine research reserves, and two connected trails begin from a small parking area off the main road. A short, flat, wheelchair-accessible boardwalk leads about a third of a mile out — two-thirds of a mile round trip — past interpretive signs and rest benches to an open overlook across the sound. From there, the rustic, unpaved Maritime Forest Trail continues north roughly three-quarters of a mile, a mile and a half round trip, winding through maritime forest to a second sound-side view.
