Best Time to Walk the Duck Boardwalk

The boardwalk is generally open from early morning into the evening. Duck Town Park, which anchors the south end, closes at dusk, but the boardwalk itself stays out later — a good option for anyone chasing the last light of the day. It's consistently one of the better sunset spots in town, especially along the open stretches that face west across Currituck Sound. Beyond the daily window, two events are worth planning around: the Town Green at Duck Town Park hosts summer concerts, and it's also the site of the Duck Jazz Festival each October.

Tips for Visiting the Duck Boardwalk

• The entire route is flat and level, making it an easy, unhurried walk regardless of pace or fitness level.
• Budget more time than you'd expect — most people end up walking it slower than they meant to, between the water views and the shops at the far end.
• Use the benches spaced along the route to pause and watch for herons, egrets, and osprey working the shallows of Currituck Sound.
• Treat the Waterfront Shops at the north end as a natural turnaround point if you're not walking the full route as an out-and-back.

Getting to the Duck Boardwalk

The boardwalk connects two anchor points along Currituck Sound. At the south end is Duck Town Park, 11 acres with its own short trails through maritime forest and willow swamp, a kayak and canoe launch, a crabbing area, a picnic shelter, a playground, and a Town Green. At the north end, the boardwalk opens onto the Waterfront Shops — boutiques, a coffee shop, a general store, and soundside restaurants along the water. The route runs directly between the two, linking the park to the shops in one continuous walk over the water.

What to Expect on the Duck Boardwalk

The Duck Boardwalk runs nearly a mile along Currituck Sound, tracing the soundside edge of town from Duck Town Park north to the Waterfront Shops. It's the closest thing Duck has to a main street — except it floats over marsh grass and open water instead of pavement. Open sound views run for much of the route before the boardwalk cuts through a stretch of marsh and forest edge and arrives at the Waterfront Shops at its north end. The route connects Duck Town Park's quieter, natural south end to the cluster of shops and restaurants at the north, all in one continuous walk over the water.
