Trail Information
About
The Freedom Trail is a 2.4-mile out-and-back path through Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island, starting near the Elizabethan Gardens parking area and ending at an overlook on Croatan Sound. It's flat, easy walking through quiet hardwood forest, with interpretive signs and small metal sculptures placed along the way that tell pieces of the Roanoke Island story — from the 16th-century Lost Colony to the site's role as a Union contraband camp and Freedmen's Colony during the Civil War, which gives the trail its name.
- 2.4 miles out and back, easy grade, roughly 13 feet of elevation change
- Trailhead near the Elizabethan Gardens parking lot, Manteo, NC
- No biking permitted
- Allow about an hour round trip
Bug spray is worth packing regardless of season — the hardwood forest holds onto humidity — and trail markers thin out toward the sound end, so it helps to have a sense of the distance before setting off. The payoff is a quiet water view at Croatan Sound most day-trippers to Fort Raleigh never reach.
Best Time to Walk the Freedom Trail
The Freedom Trail runs through hardwood forest with no shade relief from summer humidity, so spring and fall offer the most comfortable walking. Bugs are worst in the warmer months, so pack repellent no matter when you visit — there's no posted seasonal closure on the trail itself.
Tips for Hiking the Freedom Trail
- Park at the Elizabethan Gardens lot on Fort Raleigh's grounds — that's the trailhead.
- Bikes aren't allowed on this trail, so plan on walking the full 2.4 miles round trip.
- Trail markers get sparser near the Croatan Sound end, so track your distance rather than relying only on signage.
- Read the interpretive signs as you go — they cover both the Lost Colony story and the site's lesser-known history as a Civil War-era Freedmen's Colony.

What to Expect on the Freedom Trail
The Freedom Trail is a self-guided, easy out-and-back walk through the quiet hardwood forest on Fort Raleigh National Historic Site's grounds, ending at a water view on Croatan Sound. Interpretive signs and small metal sculptures along the route mark historical moments tied to the site — the 1580s Lost Colony attempts, and later, the Union-run Freedmen's Colony that gave escaped and freed Black families a settlement here during the Civil War, which is where the trail's name comes from.
