The Freedom Trail is a short, quiet walk along the water at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, on the north end of Roanoke Island a few miles from downtown Manteo. It marks the site of the Freedmen's Colony, a community of formerly enslaved people who settled here after Union forces took control of the island in early 1862.
