Getting to Lookout Loop Trail

Lookout Loop Trail sits inside Buxton Woods Reserve, a 1,007-acre tract of maritime forest stretching between the towns of Buxton and Frisco, tucked south of NC-12 and just north of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Reach the reserve via one of two unpaved roads: Old Doctor's Road or Water Association Road. Three small parking areas along these roads serve the reserve's full trail system, including Lookout Loop.

What to Expect on Lookout Loop Trail

Lookout Loop Trail is one of six marked routes inside Buxton Woods Reserve, and it's rated the easiest of the bunch. The loop follows one of the reserve's east-west relic sand dune ridges, gaining just enough elevation to open up views across the ridges and the low, swampy depressions that sit between them — a genuinely unusual bit of topography for a barrier island this narrow.

The trail passes through part of the largest remaining contiguous stand of maritime evergreen forest on the Atlantic coast. Loblolly pine, live oak, and dwarf palmetto give the woods a subtropical feel more typical of areas farther south. Buxton Woods Reserve itself is managed under North Carolina's Coastal Reserve program, serving as both a nature preserve and an outdoor research site.
